Major Port – Linkspan Pontoon

Seawork were instructed by a South Coast Major Port to attend site at short notice following an incident where a Linkspan pontoon had sunk.

The pontoon was on the seabed and was causing an obstruction to the berth that was in required to be available for use by ships.

A diving team and support vessel and equipment were rapidly dispatched to site to undertake a survey and measurements of the hatch covers so that blow tubes and air fittings could be manufactured into replacement covers. Within a couple of days the hatch covers were on site and being fitted.  Once complete and all checks undertaken compressed air was used to each compartment to displace the water.

Regular surveys were undertaken to ensure the pontoon was being de-ballasted in a controlled fashion and the pontoon remained level. When sufficient de-ballasting had occurred, the vessel rose to surface and pumping continued to refloat the pontoon.
